| Paloma's
Pals Medical Fund
In Memory of Paloma who tried so hard to fight
against all the odds.
Paloma
was a black cat. Much like every other black cat, or any cat
for that matter, which cross our threshold, she had a sad
story to share. Rescued from death row at Little Rock Animal
Services thanks to the keen eye of one of our dedicated volunteers,
there was just something special about this one.
Sweet doesn’t even cover the abundance
of love and joy Paloma exuded to all who knew her. Sadly,
Paloma fell prey to a succession of the many illnesses that
strike in any shelter. She tried so hard to infuse all of
us with love and hope. You could see it in her eyes and the
way she responded to volunteers; “just take me home,
I’ll be a good cat, I’ll love you and make you
feel special, I just need a chance.”
Unfortunately, for Paloma, that chance
never came to fruition and she sadly succumbed to her illnesses
in August of 2006 despite all best efforts of Dr Bolton at
Hot Springs Animal Hospital.
In honor of Paloma and her valiant effort,
Guardian Angels Cat Rescue & Adoption Shelter has decided
to implement a special medical fund for cats that face the
same kind of ongoing challenges that she did.
“Special Needs” kitties that
face extensive diagnostics and subsequent expensive treatments
to combat their specific ailments are few and far between
but within the scope of our mission, deserve attention above
and beyond the everyday problems of simple upper respiratory
infections, just like your own pet.
Hippy,
a recent rescue, needed extensive surgery to treat an awkwardly
placed fracture of the femur. He is well on his way to recovery
and becoming a fully adoptable cat.
Marion
dragged by a car causing extensive injuries to her hind quarters
requiring surgery to close the wound and dedicated attention
to ensure she suffered no secondary infections. Marion was
recently adopted into a loving, caring home but her medical
expenses remain.
Tyra,
one of three kittens abandoned to the shelter, nursed a useless
eye that needed surgical removal. She is bouncing back well,
but again her medical expenses remain.
Sweetie
contracted an antibiotic resistant staph infection meaning
that she has to spend at least 3 months in isolation. Supportive
care and further diagnostic testing will add to Sweetie’s
medical expenses.
Franky,
rescued from a horrible life or death situation is harboring
bronchial pneumonia and will need intensive follow up treatment
to effect a full recovery.
And then, sadly, there are those that have
passed despite our best efforts.
Veronica,
along term shelter resident, riddled with intestinal cancer.
Veronica has been sorely missed at the shelter where she was
beloved.
Buster,
a wild cat trapped behind the shelter, fell prey to FIP which,
thankfully, took his life quickly.
Abby,
another black cat who tried against all odds to survive but
sickness took her regardless.
Cowboy,
who could not thrive in the shelter, succumbed to renal failure.
Stoner,
a beloved kitten who fought hard and yet succumbed to FIP
The list goes on for the cats needing special
veterinary attention and we ask that you consider making a
donation to “Paloma’s Pals” for medical
expenses that go above and beyond the routine so that we can
provide the best care in the interests of the cats we give
shelter to.
With limited resources available to us,
we often have to make unpleasant priority decisions and are
desperately in need of your help to effect a method to make
sure that ALL cats we care for get the best medical attention
they deserve. And, of course, there will always be more.
Any amount you can spare will help us to
do this. Please consider how you would feel if it was your
pet facing these obstacles.
Thank you for your kind consideration and
donations.
